The head of the Justice Reform Commission, Fatmir Xhafaj, has expressed his support for Mayor Erion Veliaj. Through a long post on social media, as a lawyer for more than 40 years, Xhafaj argues that SPAK and GJKKO were wrong because we are dealing with a case that has invested time and money in the person and his life, in order to find criminal facts against him and not in advance of what the law allows and requires.
Erion Veliaj, as far as I know, is not a corrupt official. He is not a scoundrel, but he does not see his faults, even if they are of such a nature as to be corrupt. I don't know the entire case in question and I don't claim to know it in its essence, but from what I've read and with the knowledge I have of how this process is structured, I have my own questions about how it began and how it has been handled in this criminal case. 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡 "concrete personalities," emphasizes Xhafaj.
Xhafaj underlines that by reading the court decision that accepted and certified the prosecutor's request for the security measure "arrest in prison" he also strongly believes in an unfair trial in the procedural aspect.
"As legislators, as representatives and voters of the cities of Tirana, I have every right to demand that all this be done objectively and fairly through a due process of law, in compliance with the principles of "The conditions and provisions of the criminal procedural law, taking into account the rights and freedoms of the individual and the accused, as well as the public interest and public safety," Xhafaj highlights.
