Veliaj's American lawyer is not allowed to follow the trial in court as an observer

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, appeared this Tuesday at the Special Court of Appeal, where his appeal against the measure of imprisonment will be reviewed.
American lawyer Joshua Roberts, contracted by Veliaj to follow the process as an observer, also attempted to be present at the hearing. According to sources for Euronews Albania, Roberts was not allowed to participate in this role, although it was planned by Veliaj's defense team.
Roberts arrived in Albania on Monday and held a meeting with Veliaj at the Durres detention center. After the meeting, he gave a statement to the media, explaining the purpose of his visit and underlining the importance of respecting legal procedures.
“I am Joshua Roberts, a partner in an American law firm advising Mayor Veliaj. We have been aware of his arrest since February 10th and I have come to Albania in the role of an observer. According to the Constitution and American law, criminal charges are only filed if there is reasonable cause, and pretrial detention can only occur if there is a risk of flight or a danger to society.
Tomorrow I will observe the arguments on the appeal of Mayor Veliaj’s parole. I will make no further comment on this matter. Thank you.”
