Microsoft has announced that it will shut down Skype on May 5, 2025, redirecting users to Teams. The decision, made public in a recent blog post, marks the end of an era for Skype, a platform that was once the leading choice for instant messaging and video chat.
According to Microsoft, this change aims to simplify free communication tools and adapt them more quickly to the needs of users. Teams, which is already a leading platform for collaboration at work, will become the main hub for personal and professional connections. The free version of Teams includes the core features of Skype, such as one-on-one calls, group chats, messaging and file sharing, while adding extra features such as meeting organization, calendar tools and community functionality.
The company noted that Teams is already a giant platform, with hundreds of millions of users relying on it every day. In the past two years alone, meeting minutes for individual users on Teams have quadrupled, showing that the platform is expanding beyond office use. Microsoft sees this move as a natural step, positioning Teams to cover everything from casual conversations to structured group work.
