Scientists discover new health benefit from the world's most consumed drink

Scientists have discovered that tea leaves help purify water from harmful heavy metals, such as lead and chromium. One cup of tea can remove up to 15% of lead from drinking water.

Black tea is more effective, and the longer the tea is steeped, the more metals are removed. Cellulose bags also help filter out metals, unlike nylon or cotton bags.

Additionally, grinding the leaves increases effectiveness, expanding the surface area that captures metals. The tea may improve cardiovascular health and protect against neurodegenerative diseases.

Scientists suggest that regular tea consumption may reduce the risk of health problems linked to heavy metals. With over 6.5 million tons of tea consumed annually, this discovery brings another reason to make tea a part of our daily lives.

The study was conducted by scientists in the United States, who tested different types of tea such as green, black, oolong, white, chamomile and rooibos. They used water containing known levels of lead and other heavy metals to assess the effectiveness of the tea in removing these harmful substances.
