Albanian students abandon exact sciences

The new academic year 2024-2025 started yesterday, but public universities are suffering from the drop in the number of students and the abandonment of important branches for the education sector.

From the first round of admissions there was very little interest in the humanities and a higher tendency towards engineering majors and health programs.

The official data shows that only 5 students were registered in the first round in the Physics branch of the University of Tirana and only 8 in the Chemistry branch. While in Mathematics 23 students.

In the Language-Literature branch, more than half of the quotas remain free in the first round. Of the 120 quotas that the University of Tirana offered in this branch, 65 remained free. In History, the initial quotas were 80, while in the first round 68 quotas remained free, which means that only 12 students have chosen to study History.

Also in Geography, out of 152 initial quotas in the first round, 113 quotas remain free. In Journalism and Communication, more than half of the 80 initial quotas remain free.

Foreign languages also had a very low interest and also [the Philosophy, Social Work, Psychology programs where almost half of the quotas remain free.

In general, there was a higher interest in the Engineering branches at the Polytechnic University of Tirana.

In computer engineering, only one free quota remained from the initial round of registrations out of 150 available quotas. Even in the branches of engineering, many unfilled quotas remain, but they were at lower levels than at the University of Tirana.

In the medical university there was higher interest. In the branch of General Medicine, no free quota remained in the initial round of registrations out of 436 initial quotas. Also, there were no free quotas left in the branches of pharmacy, dentistry and nursing.

But in general nursing, midwifery, laboratory technician, physiotherapy, imaging there are unfilled quotas in the first round.

This year, about 26,000 graduates took the matura exam. But since about 80% go to university, no more than 20,000 students will start the 2024-2025 academic year.
