Gene Hackman and his wife were found dead in their Santa Fe residence. Their simultaneous deaths sparked numerous suspicions, including a double homicide or suicide.
A week later, police confirmed that the cause of death was natural.
Police confirmed yesterday that 95-year-old Hackman died of a heart attack around February 18 - a few days after Betsy Arakawa, 65, his wife died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
The actor may have wandered lost and confused for seven days in his large villa, without his partner, who had been by his side for three decades, to feed and care for him or to guard their three dogs. Left alone and with his wife's body decomposing in their bathroom, Hackman's health condition has worsened. On top of that, he has also been left without food.
The autopsy showed that his stomach was empty at the time of death.
Hackman was found dead with his cane and glasses by his side in a room near the kitchen after an apparent collision.
