Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the Trump administration has decided to close 83% of programs provided by USAID.
Through a post on the social network "X", Rubio emphasized that the remaining USAID programs that will continue will be monitored and administered by the State Department.
“After a 6-week review, we are officially canceling 83% of programs at USAID. The 5,200 contracts now canceled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve (and in some cases harm) the essential national interests of the United States. In consultation with Congress, we intend to more effectively administer the remaining 18% of programs we maintain (approximately 1,000) under the Department of State. Thank you to DOGE and our hardworking staff who worked long hours to achieve this long-overdue and historic reform,” Rubio wrote in X
