Pope Francis was in critical condition on Saturday after suffering a prolonged asthmatic respiratory attack while being treated for pneumonia and a complex lung infection, the Vatican says.
In a statement, they said the Pope "is not out of danger" as his condition continues to deteriorate.
It is the first time "critical" has been used in a written statement to describe Francis' condition since his hospitalization on February 14.
"Pope Francis experienced a respiratory crisis similar to asthma of prolonged intensity, which required the administration of high-flow oxygen," the Holy See said in a statement on Saturday evening.
