Under threat of earthquakes, Greece declares state of emergency in Santorini

A state of emergency was declared in Santorini on Thursday amid intense and persistent seismic activity that is shaking the popular Aegean island and others in its vicinity, such as Amorgos, Anafi and Ios, and residents and visitors were seen fleeing in droves.

The state of emergency will be in effect until March 1, civil protection authorities said in a statement, as tremors continued to shake the area, increasing the risk of severe landslides and rockslides.

On Wednesday night alone, six magnitude 4 earthquakes were recorded in the sea area around Santorini, followed by a stronger 5.2 tremor south of Amorgos.

"These constant shaking is starting to tire us out. Especially last night. It was non-stop. People are worried, of course, but the biggest problem is that we are awake all the time," said Anafi Mayor Iakovos Poussos.

He added that a ban due to strong winds on ferries sailing to and from the island, which has no airport, only adds to people's growing sense of insecurity.

“We are closer to the epicenter, so we shake more and the noise is noticeable,” a deputy mayor on the island of Amorgos, Stamatis Simos, told ANA-MPA.
