Prince Frederik of Luxembourg has died at the age of 22 in Paris after a long battle with the rare genetic disease POLG. The royal family confirmed the news through the official website of the POLG Foundation, which Frederik founded in 2022 to support research into the mitochondrial disorder.
"With a broken heart, my wife and I announce the passing of our beloved son, founder and creative director of the POLG Foundation," Prince Robert of Luxembourg wrote.
POLG is a serious disease that impairs energy production in cells, causing numerous health problems and ultimately organ failure. There is currently no known treatment for this disorder.
Diagnosed at the age of 14, Frederic faced the disease with courage and determination. He continued to live passionately, taking Italian lessons and exercising every day, despite the difficulties.
