The message in the sky above the beaches of Italy spreads the conspiracy theory

Messages displayed by small planes over the beaches of Italy this summer have spread the conspiracy theory that Pope Francis is not the legitimate head of the Catholic Church.

Planes carrying strange messages for Benedict XVI, the former head of the Catholic Church who resigned in 2013 after suffering health problems, have appeared in the cloudless blue skies over Italy's most popular beaches this summer.

"Benedict was in 'sedes impedita,'" read one of the messages spread across 350 kilometers of the Adriatic coast on Sunday, August 27, referring to a term known within the Vatican to indicate that the pope is in exile, imprisoned or otherwise confined.

Another similar message on the Lazio coastline on July 16 read: "Benedict XVI did not really abdicate."

The strange messages have attracted the curiosity of thousands of beachgoers, but also of the local media.

This is exactly what journalist Andrea Cionci, who believes that Pope Francis is not a legitimate pope, wanted.

Cionci has defended himself by saying he is not a conspiracy theorist, despite what he has been called in the media — and despite the fact that some experts, including supporters of Francis and more conservative Catholics, have dismissed his theory .

In an online article analyzing Cionci's theory, expert Silvio Barbaglia said the journalist could only find a secret message in Benedict's resignation speech if he viewed it "with disbelief."
