European Speech Therapy Day/Logopedia Molla: My call to parents, society and

By Ms. Berjana Molla (Speech therapist/QSUT)

March 6, European Speech Therapy Day 🗣️

My call this year is to all new parents. Give time from your day to your little ones. The most precious toy you can buy for your child is the time and play you have with them.

Talk to them non-stop all the time. Talk about everything you see and think, wherever you are and at any moment.

Second: As little exposure to technology as possible and as much play and fun in the natural environment as possible.

Third: Send babies to daycare as early as possible. It's better for them to get through one more virus than to suffer a communication breakdown.

My second appeal goes out to adult patients with aphasia, stuttering, voice disorders, etc. Hold your head up high and don't feel inferior if your words get stuck or you can't remember the right word in the right context, or that your voice is robotic now.

Society and community love you for who you are and not for how you speak.

Don't forget, you who survived ischemia or laryngeal cancer, fought tooth and nail with death and managed to be present at your family's table.

Never think that the tone of your voice or your words will shock someone or embarrass you in front of society.

Hold your head high and don't be discouraged. With your head held high, you will win this last battle that remains for you, after you won the battle of life.

My next call is to all parents and their children with hearing loss. You are young and you probably don't understand that the sounds of life are very important for their development.

To parents of children with hearing loss, I say: Spend time with your child, sing, dance, play with them as much as you can.

Start a familiar sentence/song/poem and stop it, wait for your child to recognize it and complete it with the
key word(s).

Communication is everything, Speech Therapy is the key. But without the cooperation of all levels of society (starting with the family) and all professionals in the fields, everything becomes more difficult.
