On Saturday, August 10, Egli Proga, a 42-year-old man from Pogradec was found lying on a sidewalk. He was taken to the city hospital, where he died a few minutes later.

The first news

Initially, according to the news in various media that wrote that they had information from the Police, Proga was in a drunken state and had fallen on the street. As a result of the fall, he lost his life. But it was further clarified that the cameras would be opened to reveal the incident. The police had not yet issued an official statement.

A few hours later, little by little, the full story was revealed. It is about murder. The dynamic was different.

How the event actually happened

Egli Proga had closed the bar that had been a family business for years and was heading home. His path had been blocked by Denis Meçi, who had asked him for the daily round. Proga had refused to hand over the day's tour, saying that he had children to raise. After this moment, he was beaten to death by Meçi.

Attempts to hide the crime

Denis Meçi and 3 other people who prevented the discovery of the crime were put in handcuffs. They were present at the time of the event.

Korca police announced that they arrested Voltan Shulku, 40 years old, Arian Manellari, 55 years old, and Leonidha Guçe, 47 years old. Shulku is the owner of the bar where the incident took place.

They are charged with the criminal offenses of "criminal negligence" and "actions that prevent the discovery of the truth", while Meçi was initially charged with "intentional murder".

Change of charge

The court session held yesterday changed the charge against Denis Meçi, from "Deliberate murder", for which he risks 10-20 years in prison, to "Negligent murder", for which he can receive a fine, up to 5 years in prison.

Accusations of family members

The family members of the victim, Egli Proga, from the day of the event, have made strong accusations first against the State Police, for the attempts to hide the event and up to the prosecutor of the case who decided to change the charge and slow it down. Meanwhile, for the other three arrested, he decided "Compulsory appearance".

Egli Proga's sister has made several statements to the media. She says that the authorities themselves have tried to erase the event by reporting it as accidental. According to her, the State Police acted late, while the ambulance was also late and the intervention for her brother was too late. The sister even stated that the police initially told the family members that he had fallen, but when they saw the body, they realized that he had been raped.

Public revolt

Meanwhile, a protest has been announced on the network for Monday, August 19: "March against gangs with power, for life, for safety, for justice", under the hashtag #DrejtţipërEglin
