Daimler's Mercedes-Benz has informed the owners of its luxury cars of a technical defect that could cause a fire, the company said on Tuesday, adding that repair was not possible because the parts needed to fix the problem are not available.

The news was first reported by the German newspaper Bild, which published a copy of a letter that Daimler sent to some 800,000 Mercedes-Benz owners affected by the defect saying "the risk of a fire could not be ruled out."

Daimler confirmed that the letter was authentic and added that customers will be notified as soon as the parts needed to fix the problem are available.

"Meanwhile, the affected vehicle must be driven in a careful manner and use must be reduced to a minimum," the letter said.

"The owner of an affected vehicle should always contact the nearest Mercedes-Benz service partner," the company said in a statement.

Daimler said the models affected by this defect are GLE / GLS (167 cars), C-Class (205 cars), E-Class (213 cars), S-Class (222 cars), S-Class (223 cars), E-Class Coupe / Convertible (238 cars), GLC (253 cars), CLS (257 cars) and G-Class (463 cars).
