£150,000 statue of Prince Philip toppled

The 3.9 meter sculpture of Prince Philip has stood in front of Cambridge University since 2014.

The bronze bust was erected without planning permission to commemorate Philip's 35th anniversary as university chancellor.

It is a work of abstract art that cost about 150 thousand pounds. The reception to it was bad, that no artist has ever confirmed that he was behind the work.

Now the city council has issued an enforcement order asking the landowner, Unex Group, to destroy the artwork by August.

The notice says the statue has had a 'material adverse effect' on the local area and the public eye. If no appeal is made, the sculpture must be removed along with its foundations and plinth within four months.
