Why are so many women turning their backs on prescriptions?

In the late 60s, there were many movements by women against the use of prescriptions. They started burning them even if they were no longer using them, as a revolt aimed at liberating women.

But if the generation back then was taking a stand for women's rights and saw their prescription-free status as a symbol of their independence from men, their granddaughters have a very different view.

"I wear one when I want to and I don't when I don't," says 16-year-old Freya. "I don't even think about it - it's not a problem for me at all and it's kind of surprising when it matters to other people."

Her friend Lucy agrees. "If someone isn't wearing prescriptions, I literally wouldn't notice."

Why are so many women turning their backs on prescriptions?

It's fair to say that lack of funds is not the reason why the over-the-counter trend is spreading among some women. At Glastonbury last weekend, model Poppy Delevigne went braless under her white vest, as did model Mary Charteris, as well as Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller.

In London's Soho, the recent heatwave saw women of all ages ditching more than just their jackets.

Autorja Lotte Jeffs pajtohet.

This point is significant for Gen Z, who see gender in more fluid terms than their parents. Rather than a political statement, many Gen Zers simply see the recipes as unnecessary.

"Why wear them if you don't need to, just because you're a woman? It shouldn't be considered feminist not to wear tights. It should just be considered normal," says 19-year-old Katie. "I don't understand why women have to defend their choices in the first place."
