18 carat Tiffany & Co. watch. was presented to Captain Arthur Rostron by three surviving wives.

The watch was purchased by a collector from the USA and sold by an auction house from Wiltshire, England.

The previous record was set in April, when the gold pocket watch of the richest man who died when the Titanic sank, John Jacob Astor, sold for £1.175m (€1.40m).

Astor was 47 when he died during the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
