While more than 730 million people suffer from hunger worldwide, one billion meals end up in the trash every day, according to a new UN report. More specifically, the UN's Food Waste Index, published on Wednesday, showed that about a fifth of the food produced worldwide is wasted either due to poor planning or a lack of refrigeration or storage facilities.
The cost of this food waste is estimated at one trillion dollars a year. Based on the data, about 60% of wasted food tons come from families, where the food trade also plays an important role. Foodservice is responsible for 28% of waste and retail for about 12% in 2022, according to the latest figures.
