Is euthymia a more desirable state of mind than happiness?

Is euthymia a more desirable state of mind than happiness?

Besides happiness, there is another term, euthymia, which they say is more desirable than happiness.

Euthymia - what does it mean?

The American Psychological Association defines euthymia as a mental state of well-being and calmness, without any psychological distress.

The origin of the concept dates back to 1958 and was created by the social psychologist Marie Jahoda, who coined the neologism from the combination of Greek words and identified six main categories of concepts that outline the criteria for determining the health of a positive mentality: autonomy, mastery of the environment, interactions of satisfactory with other people and with the environment, the style and rate of the individual's growth, development or self-actualization, the individual's attitudes towards himself.

Euthymia promotes good sleep, makes us more resistant to anxiety and stress, increases mental well-being, promotes resilience, which means it promotes the ability to cope with life's obstacles, thus avoiding being at the mercy of negative situations or emotions.

Euthymia also brings with it relaxing effects on the body, releasing all the accumulated tension and feeling of oppression.

It is no coincidence that mental calm combined with physical relaxation ensures that you are in the ideal conditions for a good night's sleep, and this in turn brings further positive effects on the body, from reducing the risk of heart failure to strengthening the the immune system.

What does euthymia depend on?

In 1991, Dr. Gregory L. Garamoni and colleagues suggested that euthymia depends significantly on a state of optimal balance between the individual's positive and negative conditions.

The euthymic state is also predisposed by another form of balance, i.e. the balance between different aspects of life, in everyday life, for example between work and family, between public, social and private dimensions. This form of flexibility removes the person from anxiety, depression and the tendency to experience negative emotions with greater intensity and frequency.
