The president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, has apologized for kissing striker Jenni Hermoso, Spain's top scorer, on the lips after winning the Women's World Cup.

The kiss that was heavily criticized on social networks was also commented on by the champion herself: "I didn't like it," said Hermoso on Instagram.

A day later, he apologized: "I was completely wrong, I have to admit it," said Rubiales, adding that it was without malicious intent and that it happened because he was carried away by the emotions of victory.

"I have to apologize, learn from this and understand that when you are president you have to be more careful", he further declared.

Rubiales was also criticized by some Spanish government ministers.

"It is a form of sexual violence that women suffer every day," said Irene Montero, Spain's Minister of Equality.

Even Spain's Sports Minister, Miquel Iceta, said it was unacceptable for Rubiales to kiss Hermoso: "The first thing he should do is explain and apologize, it's the logical and reasonable thing to do."
