The sale of alcohol in Qatar World Cup stadiums is banned

Alcohol will not be sold to fans in Qatar's eight World Cup stadiums after FIFA changed its policy two days before the start of the tournament.

"Following discussions between the host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been taken to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing beer outlets from the perimeter of stadiums in Qatar, said the FIFA statement.

Alcohol was set to be served in designated areas inside stadiums, despite its sale being strictly controlled in the Muslim country.

The World Cup starts on Sunday and Qatar will play Ecuador in the opening match.
