The three highest-paid athletes in world sport over the past 12 months were all footballers, according to the 2023 list published by Forbes.

After moving to Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo has become the highest paid sportsman in the world for 2023. The Portuguese earned $136 million, $46 million on the field and $90 million off the field, after leaving Manchester United and moving to the club in Saudi Arabia in 2022 with a 2-year contract.

Second and third on the list are Paris Saint-Germain forwards Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe.

Messi is said to have earned $130 million - more than $350,000 a day - over the past year.

Mbappe, who won the Golden Boot at the World Cup where he was a losing finalist with France, earned $120 million in the past 12 months.
