Albanian language is taught at Harvard University

Learning in the Albanian language began this semester in the Department of Languages and Civilizations of the Near East.

Harvard Magazine writes that one of the initiators of the inclusion of Albanian in the prestigious university is Edona Cosovic, the daughter of an Albanian immigrant from Montenegro. Raised in the United States, she learned to speak Albanian from her parents, but found it difficult to maintain the language despite her desire.

"When I was a child, my parents did not have the resources to buy us the Albanian television channel. We are in school all day, we listen to American television where everything is in English. They are also trying to learn English because they work here, so we lose the language very quickly", said the Albanian student.

In March 2022, Cosovic became interested in the possibility of creating an Albanian course at Harvard. She spoke with Eva Stathi Misho, a student coordinator from Përmeti, who expressed her willingness to help her. Before coming to the United States to study classics at the Hellenic College in Brookline, Stathi Misho studied Albanian language and literature in Tirana.
