These are the 4 cities with the lowest birth rates

Fertility indicators in Albania are rapidly deteriorating, ranking the country with the lowest fertility rates in Europe.

Although the Government has applied financial support in the form of a baby bonus since 2019, the number of births is falling rapidly year by year.

INSTAT data show that in the first 6 months of the year, births recorded an annual decrease in the country by 12.7%, but the Lezha District had the highest decrease with 23.5%, followed by Gjirokastra, with 19%, and Berati and Dibra, respectively, with 17% each.

The drop in births at a double-digit rate has also included the capital. In the first 6 months of the year, 3,785 babies were born in Tirana out of 4,345 born in the first 6 months of 2022, with a 13% decrease.

The capital was ranked among the counties with the largest drop in births among the country's 12 counties. The increase in costs in the capital, especially for real estate and rents, has made it difficult for the creation of new families and the birth of babies as well.

On the other hand, Korça, Kukësi and Durrësi had a lower birth rate.

In all counties, the decline in births is at double-digit rates in 2022. The causes are multidimensional, but the main ones are related to the decline of the population in young age groups. For example, in 2022, the 0-29 age group has decreased by 36% compared to 2001.

Among other things, the structure of the remaining population has deteriorated in favor of the elderly. INSTAT data show that on January 1, 2023, the population over 60 years old was a quarter of the total population.

People + 60 made up 23.5% of the total population with an increase of 1 percentage point compared to 2022 and with an increase of 8.8 percentage points since 2011 when the last population census was carried out./B. Hoxha
