Listening to a relaxing tune before going to bed has long been thought to help us fall asleep. Hundreds of playlists on Spotify promise music in exchange for sweet dreams.

But what exactly is relaxing music?

Scientists from Aarhus University in Denmark tried to address this question, and they were surprised to find that pop and R&B music often appears in playlists with sleep-related names or descriptions.

The researchers analyzed more than 225,000 songs from 985 playlists on Spotify that were associated with sleep and compared them to music from a data set that represents music in general.

Their research found that relaxing music is often characterized by lower tempo, noise and energy and is more likely to be instrumental and acoustic, such as Brahms' Lullaby.

However, when counting the number of times a particular song appeared on sleep playlists, the most popular song, appearing 245 times, was "Dynamite" by Korean pop group BTS.

Other popular songs that frequently appeared on Spotify sleep playlists were "Jealous" by Labrinth, or "lovely" (by Billie Eilish and Khalid.

Dr Kira Vibe Jespersen, a professor at Aarhus University who took part in the study, said the variety and frequency of pop music that came up in the database was the most surprising finding.

The study was published in the scientific journal Plos One.
