The singer and his childhood sweetheart kept the pregnancy a secret, but he has now revealed that the couple were plagued by 'fear, depression and anxiety' during this time.

Ed announced the release of his sixth album Subtract, explaining that it was inspired by personal tragedies he had faced.

He wrote: “I had been working on 'Subtract' for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be.

“Then in early 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art. Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me understand my feelings. I wrote without thinking about what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever came to me. And in just over a week I replaced a decade's worth of work with my darkest thoughts. Within a month, my pregnant wife was told she had a tumor, with no treatment options until after delivery. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly. I was going through fear, depression and anxiety. "I felt like I was drowning looking up but not being able to catch my breath," Ed Sheeran writes.

"Subtract" will be released on May 5.
