Helen Mirren has revealed she sent a letter to the Queen while filming her 2006 film about Elizabeth's life.

The drama, written by "The Crown" creator Peter Morgan, focused on the aftermath of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and the Queen's reactions and decisions after the event.

Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar and a Bafta for her portrayal, said she quickly realized she was dealing with a sensitive moment in the Queen's life and decided to contact her herself.

The 76-year-old told the Radio Times: “I realized we were investigating a deeply painful part of her life, so I wrote to her. I told him: We are making this film. We are digging into a very difficult time in your life. I hope it's not terrible for you. I have the utmost respect for you."

"The letter was not answered by the queen, but by her secretary who had written on behalf of the queen: Honestly, blah, blah, blah, things like that. Afterwards I was very relieved that I had written that letter," adds Helen.

Helen revealed that the biggest difficulty was because she would be playing the role of a living monarch.

After the film's release, Helen received an invitation to dine with the Queen, but was unable to attend as she was filming in the US.
