Self-determination decided its own destiny

Self-determination decided its own destiny

By Erjon Uka / At the moment when the old caste of Kosovar politics a year ago came together to overthrow the government of Albin Kurti and Vetëvendosje, nothing happened but the great division between the two main ways of doing politics in Kosovo was clarified : between the debauched pragmatism that had turned as its goal the preservation of the current ruling position of the ruling class and the new spirit that not only required the overthrow of the old politics but above all the creation of a different mentality in state formation and public administration.

It was clear that the hatred aroused in the population by this unnatural union in terms of ideology and political history would have resulted in what Liburn Aliu, MP of Vetëvendosje, declared in the Assembly at that time: The obligation to win the elections deeper and to build government alone.

This happened not too late, but this February 14 where Vetëvendosje, by creating the spirit and promising change, almost doubled the result, while the votes from the diaspora can give the possibility of forming a government alone. Not in the parcelized policy of Kosovo and guaranteed minority seats in Parliament. If there is one gift that was given to the Movement, it was the greed and camouflage of a year ago to throw him out of power at any cost. And that is why the leaders of the parties that dominated politics for two decades had no alibi and at least accepted the result that was coming out of the boxes before the day passed.

Criticism and rebellion, wrote Niklas Luhman in one of his essays, are not made from outside but within society. This is exactly what Lëvizja Vetëvendosje has done, first as a street organization and then, year after year, an increasingly important factor of politics. Herein lies the strength of the Movement, where in the sixteen years of its existence the steps were slow but powerful, well thought out and synchronized. He did not forget the reasons for the spirit of the protests even when he became part of politics, parliament and government.

This is how she decided her own fate.

The victory of Vetëvendosje also shows that it is not the fault of the people that they do not immediately swallow what is offered to them. If in Albania small parties formed a few months before the elections as factions and personal divisions between political leaders failed to gain the trust of the people, their disappearance and rehabilitation again in the corners of power a few weeks after the elections did nothing but refute the claim. that it is the fault of the people who do not want change and proved that this people, often times, has the instinct of more developed knowledge than some election results tables can show. The victory and the massive confidence in Vetëvendosje did not come after sixteen days, it came after sixteen years.

This is a lesson.

Self-determination sacrificed power for ideas. He did it when he was in opposition, he did it in government, he did it with Albanian men and with American allies. It did not stop at choosing programmability versus advantageous temporality.

This is inspiration.

He managed to make its ideology and philosophical articulation tangible and understandable to the masses, twisting like a prism of light the incomprehensibility of the complex language of auditoriums and meeting rooms for the ordinary peasant or retiree. It is one of the most ideological parties not only in the Albanian space, but probably also in the Balkans, as a stand and tangible proof that ideology can produce continuity.

This is effort.

But perhaps above all, the Movement's greatest achievement was to make the people believe in change. This is the greatest service he managed to do to Kosovo, which can do to Albania, Macedonia or Montenegro, the entire Albanian space where it is expanding and the national project must continue to find a place. When people get together, they can make a difference.

In an opinion published last winter (read here), when the "Kurti I" government had just received the vote of confidence and started working, I thought that his necessary idealism was coming at the right time, given the answer to the question if he saw himself si utopist a naive. Neither one nor the other, but he saw it as idealistic. This is the idealism that brought him to power, with no secret dinners and no promises of land allotment.

As far as I read, there is no philosophy clearer and more poignant than that which comes from ordinary people, from everyday life. How dry were the words an old woman said to Albin Kurti on the street during the campaign:

"If you work for the people and for the state, then you have our support and then you have life." If you work for your pockets, we remove them just like them. They have led it like this for 21 years, they have become millionaires and billionaires, but we will not leave you for that long, we will cut you short. But we have no choice but you. "

Here, so simple.
