Election paradoxes: having more opportunities is not always better

Election paradoxes: having more opportunities is not always better

By Barry Schwartz / I did a lot of research, a lot of testing and experimentation and wrote a book on "choice" to understand why in a world that offers us so much there is such a high level of depression, dissatisfaction and suicide.

They call them modern evils, the evils of well-being. And what I have discovered is really very interesting. That is why I want to speak based on what I call "official dogma". The rationale lies in the fact that freedom in itself constitutes a value, it is precious, useful, essential to human beings.

But the other side has to do with the fact that we are free, each of us can act on his own account in doing everything that can maximize personal well-being. The way to maximize freedom is to maximize choice. The more choices people have, the freer they are and the greater their freedom, the greater their well-being.

This I believe is so ingrained in society that no one would dream of questioning it. I want to cite some examples of what progress has made possible.

In my supermarket, which is not very big, there are 175 different flavored ingredients for salads, not counting the 10 varieties of extra virgin olive oil and 12 balsamic vinegars that can be purchased to prepare a large number of salads, in most cases bad if none of the 175 flavors you like. Here is how the supermarket is.

Then go to the electronics store to buy a cassette stereo, with CD player, with radio, amplifier. And it is in this single electronics store that there is a large number of audio components; we can make six and a half million combinations using components found in just one store. We have to admit that there are many choices.

What does this incredible freedom of choice mean to us?

It means that we have to constantly make decisions, at every moment. Should we work or not? We can go to see the boy playing football with a cell phone in one pocket, another cell phone in the other pocket and a notebook on his knees.

So, whichever way we look at it, big or small, or material objects or lifestyles, life is a matter of choice.

So the end result is that we are generally better, but we feel worse. This is the official dogma, what we all understand as something positive but in fact it is false. It's not true. There is no doubt that some choices are better than no choices, but the consequence of this does not mean that the more choices we have the better.

It has a critical, magical value. I do not know which one is exactly. But I'm pretty sure we have pretty much surpassed the level at which choices improve our lives.
