The pandemic revealed, did not create, our loneliness

By Susanna Tamaro / It has been raining for a month and I continue to be closed. The activities we started doing at the beginning, happy for the free time that came to us suddenly, such as arranging lockers or arranging the library, ended as the fever for the TV series that in the first months of the pandemic turned into a kind of parallel worlds where we could live.

Winter has come and for those who like me live in the village, there is no longer even the opportunity to deal with the garden, so during the Christmas period I brought out the beautiful board games: shangai, dominoes, cards. Staying in a chair in front of a bright screen eventually becomes boring because we are social beings and at some point we need to meet, laugh, hug, talk and even to be surprised by something we did not expect: the right letter at the right moment, the one that allows us to win the game when everything seems lost.

In addition to games, I started doing so-called "women's jobs" as many of my friends do: spending time building something instead of wasting it on consumer vanity. So I started embroidering to hang on my studio door: Beata solitudo, sola beatitudo. Loneliness has always been the dominant figure of my life: I never get bored alone and I need loneliness to enter the world, otherwise everything becomes difficult for me to achieve, but that has never stopped me from having relationships and friendships. thella.

The previously unseen situation from the virus made us suddenly reflect on this conditioning. The inability to see and meet has made many people feel desperate alone. But is it really so, or was the virus just a covetous test that highlighted the deep isolation into which virtual society has plunged us?

It has happened to me more than once in these years to be on a bus where I had to ask about the next station, but I did not receive a response from any of the passengers as they were somewhere else, as it often happens to me when walking on the trails of the village: most of the people I meet and greet do not answer me, immersed in another world, thanks to headphones ubiquitous in the ear.

"Evil does not always come for evil," it is said from antiquity, and sayings are always the result of a layered wisdom over time. The wonderful technologies we possess showed their potential in an emergency moment, but in doing so, they also pointed out the great nudity of reality that is part of our nature. We are "social animals" but social networks are not enough for us. We need to get into the game, face the challenges, build the time rather than consume it. And construction only goes through the sudden confrontation with the other.
