Memory is a narrative fabric

Memory is a narrative fabric

South Korean-born German philosopher Byung-chul Han returns to clear the mist of contemporary wonder with the book "Things That Are Not: How to Stop Living the Truth."

With the clarity of a profound prose that never loses its characteristic accuracy, Han dismantles part by part the illusion of the present and the liquefaction of the tangible world into non-existent digital things, emphasizing the change that our relationship with possession has undergone, replaced by access to information that distorts us. Between smartphones and selfies , we abandon ourselves to an artificial intelligence that very little can do for us. The only salvation is to rediscover the Other and the way of contemplation, through the silence of happiness.

Digitalization "disfigures the world", destroying our memories. Proponents of digital life support the idea that memory is transferred to servers, where it is readily available for consultation. Why do you disagree with this post-human vision?
The post-human approach is based on a mistake. Memory does not consist of storing data and information. Through memories we tell a story. Memory is not quantitative, but narrative. This narrator distinguishes memory from digital information storage media, which only work by adding new keys. Memory tracks are constantly subjected to sorting and transcription processes. They intertwine in a new way, taking each other for reference. That's why we always tell a different story. Memory is a narrative fabric. The memory traces are alive while the data storage device is dead. The stored data always remain the same, unchanged. Dead. Information makes everything transparent. But only dead things are transparent. Living things do not allow themselves to be transformed into data and information. This is why Nietzsche also elevates ignorance to the primary nucleus of life. It is not enough just to understand that humans and animals live in ignorance: we must also rediscover the will not to know, learning to tolerate this lack of transparency. Ignorance is therefore a prerequisite for the development of living things. Post-humanists do not know what life is.

How does information distort the truth?
Information alone is not enough to explain the world. Today we are very well informed, but we lack a sense of orientation. We approach information with the suspicion that things may be different. Information is accompanied by a fundamental distrust. This distinguishes it from the truth. The more we are faced with a variety of information, the more distrust grows. And by passing a critical point, the information ceases to be informative and turns into misinformation. This is an essential feature of information and that is why fake news is an essential component of the information society. The information society is a society of doubt. Information does not belong to the order of being, but to the order of chance. Truth consists of a very different structure from that of information. The function of truth is to reduce the chance of unpredictability. If you look closely, the truth is a narrative. Information is never summarized in a narrative. Truth, unlike information, provides us with support and guidance. Information leads to a narrative crisis, to a void of meaning. Alone, data and information explain nothing. It is in this context that conspiracy theories flourish, offering simple explanations. Conspiracy theories simplify the world by reducing complexity and unpredictability. in a void of meaning.

Komunizmi e shtyp lirinë, kapitalizmi neoliberal i “pëlqimit” e shfrytëzon atë.
