Collective intelligence, our first antivirus

Collective intelligence, our first antivirus

By Mauro Bonazzi / How to succeed in life? The question is simple and difficult at the same time. It's hard because no one knows what the formula for success is, always if there is any. But the question is simple, in the sense that everyone understands what it is about.

What are the qualities - the virtues, according to the ancients - that help us to create our journey? The meaning is clear to everyone. All but one. For when Menon asked Socrates, Socrates replied that he had no idea where he was when he mentioned these gifts or virtues. For this he could say nothing.

Menon was stunned, but even Socrates had no idea. They seemed to be talking about practical issues, but in reality, the discussion revolved around the possibility of recognition, which touches us very closely. It is about the great paradox of knowledge: if neither I nor others know what we seek, how can we seek it?

It may seem paradoxical no more, but this quote is more current than we think. On January 30, 2003, a trader was admitted to Canton Hospital. There was vomiting and breathing problems. In those days, how many people were plagued by the flu or digestive problems in China, Europe or America? It certainly did not help much to know that a few days later a lady in Toronto felt bad, and a few days later also another lady in Singapore. Many of those who had been in contact with these people soon developed similar symptoms. The problem was serious. But, like Menon and Socrates, they were all walking in the dark not knowing what to look for.

There are many things we do not yet know about this virus. But in the meantime we have figured out what to look for and start defending ourselves. This too - how important is knowledge! - is a lesson we owe to the virus.

As Socrates taught ("virtue is knowledge" is his truest thesis: without knowledge you can go nowhere), with all due respect to Menon and his ilk today.
