The first interview as a Nobel laureate, Giorgio Parisi uses the study of birds to explain what our society should be like

Is this the chaos you have always studied? "In fact, he looks a lot like him , " smiles Giorgio Parisi as colleagues and journalists pull him out of his jacket, on what is the most messy day of his life, amidst toasts, phone calls and congratulations at the Accademia dei Lincei, where he is vice president. "But it has always been the passion of my life and the object of my research to bring order to chaos . "

Nice day for science?
We needed to. Basically, it is thanks to science and vaccines that today we can celebrate together. I hope the award is a signal to reverse the trend of Italian research. Today there are many young people who are forced to work abroad.

How have you always stayed in Italy?
I have always wanted to stay and I have been lucky. Here I have had excellent mentors and colleagues.

You have written incomprehensible scientific articles, but also children's tales.
I wrote them for my two children, and today I read them to my four-year-old nephew.

You say that science is taught to children in kindergarten. Do you pass something on to your nephew?
He is passionate about dinosaurs. He says that when he grows up, he will become a dinosaur. But I believe that science is in trouble today, also because of the lack of dissemination of scientific culture. That is why I believe that children should be taught from an early age, of course in a simplified way. We should not be surprised that no one trusts RNA vaccines as long as no one has bothered to explain what they are.

Do vaccination opponents bother you?
We are talking about a small percentage of people, which will stop at 10-15%, but which still makes us realize that we have a problem. A century ago it was thought that science would make our future better. Today we no longer find this belief. We doubt whether our living conditions will really improve, and consciously or not, we blame science for that. It is true that the situation is critical on many fronts, but to get out of this situation, we need more science, not less science. This is especially true of climate change, which requires even greater commitment on the part of Italy.

What would happen if science faded?
We live in a technology-obsessed society, but forget that technology is based on science. By drying the latter, it ceases to exist even the first. Or it will be left to those few countries that continue to invest in knowledge. There is a book by Marco D'Eramo entitled "The Shaman in the Helicopter". Describes a magician in Central Asia who practices various magic formulas, but this does not prevent him from using the helicopter to travel from one place to another. I believe that today there is a disconnect between the tools we use and the knowledge we have about them. This makes science seem like pseudo-magic. It reminds us of the situation of the ancient Romans, who borrowed Greek technology without absorbing its scientific culture.

* Giorgio Parisi is an Italian physicist and academic, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2021 for the study of complex systems. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. This interview for "La Repubblica", conducted one day after being awarded the Nobel Prize, was translated into Albanian by Erjon Uka.
