Democracy of the gullible

Democracy of the gullible

Gérald Bronner is the sociologist of beliefs, professor of Sociology at the University of Paris VII, member of the National Academy of Medicine, of the Academy of Technology and of the University Institute of France. Author of many books, in a report written for the President of France entitled "Enlightenment in the digital age", Bronner proposes a series of solutions to face the danger of the apocalypse of knowledge.

Fake news is very widespread and the public has developed a certain sensitivity to this type of information. However, fake news has always circulated. What is different today from the Middle Ages?
Our perception of the world has evolved greatly, just as the literal interpretation of the Bible has gone beyond. Compared to the Middle Ages, the information market has changed as the amount of information is greater. In the Middle Ages, information was transmitted orally and was based on our memory capacities, often alienating the message. Books were expensive and rare. Then the press was invented, and today we have information that spreads over the airwaves. The Internet is the latest form of deregulation of the information market. What is different is that before only the "guardians", the gatekeepers of the information market, spoke, while now anyone with an online account can challenge a medical professor about the vaccine. For more, characteristic of today's information market is the competitive pressure unprecedented in the history of mankind, due to the reduction of costs of production and distribution of information. All intellectual models that claim to describe the world, whether superstition and knowledge, magical thinking or political ideology, are unfiltered in free competition. This has created an unprecedented availability of information. More information was produced in the 2000s than in the entire period from Gutenberg to the year 2000. In the last two years we have produced 90% of all the information we have. magical thoughts or political ideology, are without any filter in free competition. You are called the sociologist of beliefs. What is the difference between a belief and a knowledge?
It is very difficult to define the boundaries between belief and knowledge. It can be said that faith is a model that claims to describe the world according to the categories "true" and "false", that is, between good and bad, between beautiful and ugly. Knowledge also claims the same. As I wrote in "L'empire des croyances", in most cases we are faced with beliefs. Moments of knowledge are rare in the human consciousness, because knowledge is when we are faced with a statement that is probably true and for which we possess the entire argument. Beliefs are not necessarily false: for example one can believe the Big Bang theory. It can be said: "I believe in this theory even though I do not fully understand it, it is a delegated belief." "I believe because I trust the community of scientists, but I cannot say that it is a matter of knowledge, because I do not possess all the arguments that allow me to have complete knowledge". In most cases we have a relationship of faith in the face of ideas, in the case of the Big Bang the faith is most likely true and is not about the belief that touching an iron removes the evil eye. Knowledge is a relation to a statement for which we know the argument perfectly and most probably is true. All the rest is faith. The worst belief, the one of the lowest rank, is the false one for which we have no evidence and know nothing, such as superstitions. There is a not very clear border between these two.
