Scientists have discovered a new virus in the deepest part of the ocean
A virus discovered in the Pacific is thought to be the first found in a deep spot in the planet's oceans.

The pathogen was found at a depth of 8,900 meters in the Mariana Trench. This channel is the deepest point of the Pacific Ocean, almost 11,000 meters. The virus, which cannot infect humans, was named vB_HmeY_H4907 after analysis of its genome.

The virus belongs to the category of bacteriophages that infect and multiply in the same way as bacteria. They are thought to be one of the most widespread forms of living life on Earth and play a key role in ocean ecology by helping to regulate population numbers and nutrient release.
