Scientists make an important discovery for the treatment of breast cancer

Scientists say they have made a breakthrough in breast cancer research.

The study, which was funded by the UK-based charity Prevent Breast Cancer, found that tissue can be preserved in a special gel. This method will help scientists identify the most effective drug treatments for patients.

The experts found that the tissue held in this gel retained the structure, cell types and ability to respond to a range of drugs in the same way as normal breast tissue. The research could bolster the development of new drugs to treat and prevent breast cancer, without the need for animal testing.

"The treatment that has been available so far cannot fully capture the complexity of human tissue, the absence of human extracellular matrix, stroma and immune cells, all of which are known to influence therapy response," they said.

A researcher at the University of Manchester, said the discovery would help scientists test the most suitable drugs in living tissue for the treatment and prevention of breast cancer.
