The origin of chronic pain is still a mystery to science

About one in ten chronic pain sufferers are estimated to have disabling pain, making it the leading cause of disability worldwide.

In 2017, a new form of chronic-nociplastic pain was discovered, in which both tissues and nerves appear healthy, but discomfort persists. Up to one billion people suffer from this condition.

Researchers have found that talking to doctors about this problem relieves pain, but on what scientific basis?

When pain persisted after six months, which is typical of tendonitis, doctors recommended surgery. "Every time they opened me up, what they were looking for wasn't there," she says. The second of those procedures, intended to relieve pressure on her radial nerve, actively made things worse. Since then, she occasionally experiences what feels like electricity threatening the wound caused by the procedure. "The pain can go up and up a lot, but it doesn't go down," she says. Other diagnoses have been made and rejected, but the true origin of her pain remains mysterious.
