The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared loneliness a global health problem and created an international commission to combat it.
The new commission, led by the Surgeon General of the United States Dr. Vivek Murthy will run for the next three years and look at how loneliness and social isolation can affect physical, mental and emotional health, with Murthy, 46, suggesting the effects can be as bad as smoke up to 15 cigarettes a day.
"Referring to the profound health and social consequences of loneliness and isolation, we have an obligation to make investments until the problem is addressed," said Murthy.
