Is it advisable to consume coffee before exercise? Here is what studies show

To have an effective workout many people choose what they consume before physical activity. But there is still debate about the effectiveness of coffee as a "pre workout". Should we consume it before a workout and does it really give you more energy?

A 2002 study found that consuming coffee before doing physical activity improves physical performance by 1.7%.

Several other studies show that consuming coffee in addition to improving physical performance also reduces fatigue and aids in neuro-muscular performance.

Nutrition expert Rhiannon Lambert explains that coffee has caffeine as its active ingredient, which is a stimulant. Many people choose to consume coffee before exercise because in addition to improving physical performance, it also affects mental one, making us more alert.

Caffeine is the ingredient needed before physical activity. Caffeine can be taken in the form of coffee, pre-workout supplements, sweets or any other sports drink.

For best results, it is advisable to drink 1 cup of coffee 45-60 minutes before exercise and you can add a little milk, but avoid sugary drinks as they adversely affect digestion and can cause stomach pain.

Simply put, caffeine helps the body generate more energy in the muscles.

Anne Larchy, nutritionist, says that despite these positive effects, coffee as a 'pre-workout' is not an exact science. If you are one of those people who have side effects from caffeine like: frequent heartbeats or shaking hands then consuming caffeine before the gym is not such a good idea.

Caffeine also stimulates the brain and if you suffer from anxiety try to consume it in moderation and stay hydrated. If you usually exercise at dinner it is best to avoid consuming caffeinated beverages at least 6 hours before bed because it also causes insomnia.
