3 habits that may be sabotaging your mental health without realizing it

Psychologist Robin Berzin says it's important to track some small, unconscious habits we do every day, as they can affect mental well-being.

Pay attention to these three habits below—which, according to Berzin, may be secretly sabotaging your mental health:

1. Using technology (especially at night).

According to Berzin, exposure to blue light at night has the potential to sabotage our sleep, which has downstream effects on mental well-being.

"We have the world at our fingertips, information at the touch of a button, and that's wonderful and empowering — but it also has the potential to wreak havoc on our mental and emotional well-being," she says.

2. Lack of movement.

"We are designed as human beings to change emotions through movement," says Berzin. "The body is designed to do this, and when you don't move and sit for an average of 11 hours a day, you hold your emotions." And those 'stuck' emotions can lead to physical and mental consequences in your body."

3. Alcohol.

Berzin believes that alcohol can be part of a balanced lifestyle, but when it comes to mental well-being, it's important to ask yourself: Are you drinking to feel better, or are you drinking to feel even better? "If alcohol is your way of coping with life, that may indicate you're using it in a problematic way," notes Berzin.
