For centuries, people in the Mediterranean got up after long meals and took a walk, often in the town square. Walking is often listed as a cornerstone of the healthy Mediterranean diet.

This may be one of the reasons why studies have found that the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and some cancers – strengthening bones, improving brain health, warding off dementia and depression and helping with weight loss.

Now you can add another reason to take a walk after a meal – it can lower your blood sugar.

Walking for two to five minutes after a meal can be enough, according to a 2022 study in the journal Sports Medicine.

"Movement after meals reduced glucose by an average of 9.51% compared to sitting for a long time. However, intermittent walking throughout the day saw a greater reduction in glucose by an average of 17.01% compared to prolonged sitting,” the researchers told CNN.
