Northern Macedonia registers the first case with the Omicron variant
Northern Macedonia registered on Friday, December 24, the first case with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The Ministry of Health of Northern Macedonia has announced that the infection was registered in a person who arrived from Great Britain two days ago. After showing symptoms of the virus, it was tested and in this case the Omicron variant was detected.
The test was performed at a private clinic in Skopje.
The patient affected by the Omicron variant was previously ill with COVID-19, in January this year, but as a case that did not show symptoms. According to the Ministry of Health of Northern Macedonia, he was also vaccinated with two doses of Pfizer vaccine.
"The test was performed at the private hospital 'Jean Mitrev' in Skopje, on a man who came to the country from Great Britain. At the moment, the patient has a light clinical picture and is being treated in isolation in his home ", announced the Ministry of Health of Northern Macedonia.
According to specialist doctors, those infected with the Omicron variant do not have a severe clinical picture, but due to the rapid spread of the infection, there is a possibility that hospitals will be overloaded and the health care system will face a large influx of patients.
"All relevant and independent indications suggest that Omicroni has much milder symptoms and the chances of ending up in hospital are about 80 percent lower than the currently dominant variant, Delta." "There is no need to panic", declared the special doctor, Niko Beqarovski.
Despite the introduction of the first case with the Omicron variant, there are no announcements from the Ministry of Health of Northern Macedonia for the imposition of new restrictions. Health experts warn that something needs to be done, especially for the upcoming holidays when there are groupings and big parties.
Acting Minister of Health Venko Filipce said on Thursday that the epidemiological situation in northern Macedonia is stable and even with a tendency to improve further.

According to official data, about 220,000 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Northern Macedonia, of which about 7,800 have lost their lives while there are about 8,000 active cases.
