Veliaj for the Italian media: Today Albanians are free to believe, travel and be European
During his visit to Rome and the Vatican, where he was received by Pope Francis, the mayor Erion Veliaj also gave an interview to the Italian television RaiTre, regarding the experience of Tirana as the European Youth Capital 2022 and what awaits him next year. now that it has just received the title of European City of Sport.
"Europe is not a destination outside of us, but a destination within us. We have been a country of immigrants, mountains of people boarded ships to come here, and now, for more than 10 years, we have hosted the Iranian opposition, last year we hosted the Afghans, and this year the Ukrainians. Therefore, I believe that all countries can change. If Albania has changed, after the brutal communist regime, all countries can change and welcome people with dignity", said Veliaj.
"I belong to the generation of the 80s, when religious belief was forbidden in Albania. Likewise, the names of the Bible or the Koran could not be used. So I am the example of a world that has already passed. We have suffered a lot, but now we are free. Free to believe, free to travel, free to be European", he added.
Veliaj was invited to this visit by Pope Francis, as part of the European Year of Youth. The mayor informed the Pope about the construction of the Mother Teresa shrine in the Artificial Lake Hills.
