Veliaj: Opening files, the right way to part with the bitter past

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, at the promotional meeting for the new book of the singer Ermal Meta, "Tomorrow and forever", spoke about the opening of the State Security files and the law passed at the time when he headed the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth . He said that it was the right decision for the Albanian society.
"On the last day that I headed the Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth, we passed in Parliament the law on opening the files of the dictatorship and at that time, as a team, we had a big dilemma: whether opening the files would heal society or open a greater wound, shall we avenge each other. Perhaps we will no longer be here, in this world, when it will be judged, but I believe that the truth sets us free. The truth gives us the opportunity to communicate, to know how to talk to each other, to pour milk where there has been hemorrhage in our society. Therefore, I think we made the right decision to open the files," said Veliaj.
He added that realizing that we have done the biggest evils to each other, it is a way of reflection for society on how it will be in the future.
"I know that our Balkan culture, whenever something bad happens, blames it on someone else. But, when we open the files, or when you read Ermal's book, we will understand that we have done the vilest, most evil and most dirty things to each other. Neither fascism, nor Nazism, nor the Greeks, nor the Greeks did it to us. Therefore, I believe that above all, this book, at least for me, was a way of reflection to understand that each of us is called to a public position, to serve somewhere and to play a role. The question is: What role does it play? The role of the one who unites, who brings closer, who loves, who produces kindness, or the role of the one who divides, who intrigues, who deconspirates, who causes pain?", argued Veliaj.
