Palaces damaged by the November earthquake, Veliaj: Transparent process,

The Municipal Council of Tirana took the decision to demolish some buildings severely damaged by the November earthquake, the reconstruction of which exceeds the value of 70% of the construction cost.

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj announced that when the cost of repairing the damaged buildings exceeds 70%, according to Albanian law, they will be rebuilt from scratch.

"Today we make difficult decisions for the demolition and construction from scratch of those buildings that repair costs more than 70% of the construction cost. As the Law states: the decision of the Municipality of Tirana for the forced demolition of buildings, privately or publicly owned, for those cases when the building is damaged by a natural disaster and can not be repaired or when its repair costs more than 70% of the cost of construction from scratch, will be obtained through a transparent process and based on the provisions of normative act no. 9, dated 16.12.2019. In 8 marathon sessions, which were broadcast "live" to the public, the experts presented in-depth expertise on the buildings damaged by the earthquake. A process that today is helping us to make clear decisions, fair and based on professional conclusions ", said Veliaj.

The Mayor asked for the understanding and cooperation of the citizens in this process and assured them that the new apartments will offer many times better and more modern conditions than the old ones.

"Obviously it is a sensitive topic, decisions for demolition will not be easy at all for us, nor for the affected families. It will be an emotional separation, especially for those people who have memories and live with nostalgia. But I want to guarantee the citizens that they will get something better, bigger, and more valuable than what they had. Therefore, understanding, cooperation and patience are needed until the day comes for handing over the keys to the apartments with much better and more modern conditions ", declared Veliaj.
