Bulgarian Government: We do not change our position on Macedonia, we support Albania in starting negotiations
Bulgaria will not lift its veto on the start of negotiations between the Republic of Northern Macedonia and the EU, but has expressed support for Albania on its path to the EU. This statement was made today by the Bulgarian transitional government.
The stance was approved by the cabinet of caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Janev ahead of his participation in the European Council on December 14th, where Bulgaria will be represented by President Rumen Radev, according to Bulgarian media.
"Bulgaria will adhere to the Declaration of the National Assembly of October 10, 2019 regarding the EU enlargement and the Stabilization and Association Process of the Republic of Northern Macedonia and the Republic of Albania, as well as the framework position for the European perspective.
For Bulgaria, the basic principle of merit of each candidate remains crucial. "Bulgaria believes that Albania is ready for progress on the road to the EU and is ready to support the approval of the Negotiating Framework for the country and the holding of the first Intergovernmental Conference," said the Council of Ministers.
