EP President David Sassoli sues the European Commission

EP President David Sassoli has asked the European Parliament's legal team to prepare a lawsuit against the EC for the latter's "failure" to punish countries that "violate" the rule of law. According to the regulation, which was adopted last December, the EU has the right to suspend payments from the bloc budget for member states in which the rule of law is under threat, according to Sassol, the European Commission has not followed this regulation.

Through a letter David Sassoli makes it clear that Parliament will withdraw this legal proceeding if the Commission takes the necessary measures.

The letter from the President to Parliament's legal services comes after a vote in Parliament's legal affairs committee recommended that proceedings be brought before the Court of Justice. Most of the leaders of the political groups in today's Conference of Presidents supported this decision.

After the meeting, President Sassoli said:

"EU member states that violate the rule of law should not receive funding from the EU. Last year, Parliament fought hard for a mechanism to ensure this. So far, however, the European Commission has been reluctant to use it.

The European Union is a community built on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. If these are under threat in a member state, the EU must act to protect them. "I therefore asked our legal services to prepare a lawsuit against the Commission to ensure that EU rules are properly enforced."
