Being comfortable with yourself, the lesson that the Covid-19 pandemic taught us

By Barbara Stefanelli

The disruption of normal life due to the pandemic changed the world, especially the people inside. This after the pandemic emptied the streets. And in both big cities and small towns, we all suddenly found ourselves locked up at home with ourselves, just our families, sometimes isolated from the rest of the family so as not to infect it, when we we were affected by the virus.

This situation is described very well by psychoanalysts, therapists, writers and podcasters, whom we interviewed for the latest supplement of the newspaper entitled "Psychology and well-being: Understanding each other to understand our problems". Being still indebted to the intuition of Michel Foucault, according to which "we cannot take care of ourselves without knowing it".

The French philosopher and academic constantly warned that the cure "is of course self-knowledge, but also the knowledge of some rules or principles of behavior that are both truths and recommendations". Therefore, we must reflect and assimilate these truths, equip ourselves with them, letting the personal level pass into that of ethics.

It's hard to focus on what we've learned under the pressure of a jam-packed calendar: We often feel like we're moving forward, then backtracking, able to accept the changes made, and then only feeling nostalgic.

In a landscape that is still confusing but that we know has changed, the most powerful emotional legacy of Covid-19 seems to be the discovery of our need and ability to ask for help. So we ask for help - without any kind of stigma - and try to confront the problem, the pain, the uncertainty, avoiding the old parameters measuring well-being and success.

It is a mutual appreciation. Very soon the "storm" of imaginary pathologies, historically romanticized, will calm down. But in the skin and under it the signs of evil will remain. So initiatives and public spaces will be needed, a psychologist in every school, a bigger bonus, good counseling centers - well equipped, so that the pain does not become an accelerator of inequalities.

Perhaps we are no worse than before, that is, before the winter of 2020. Perhaps we have gained more information and are more aware, and more encouraged by the younger, freer and braver than the rest of us.
