Qatar 2022, the shadows of a world championship that takes place for the first time in winter

Qatar 2022, the shadows of a world championship that takes place for the first

By Edoardo Falzon

This year's World Cup will take place in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. It is the first time in the history of this competition, that a tournament takes place in the winter season, imposing the interruption for almost 2 months of all major European championships.

Since the decision, the organization and ultimately the holding of the World Cup, there are many questions and not a few mysteries surrounding FIFA and Qatar, which achieved its goal through corruption, political games, scandals and thousands of dead on the job.

Starting with Muhammad bin Hamam. Former member of the FIFA Executive Committee and former president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Investigated 2 times by the world football organization, first for corruption - in 2011 he tried to "buy" the presidency of FIFA through envelopes with 40 thousand euros in bribes - and then for conflict of interest (before May 2011 no one it was agreed that bin Hamam would be both president of the AFC and also a member of the FIFA executive).

In 2014, the British "The Sunday Times" claimed to have discovered several bribes worth 5 million dollars, precisely in connection with the candidacy and subsequent selection of Qatar as the host country of the 2022 World Cup. But is the world worth all these violations ?

This is what Michel Platini and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy think. On November 23, 2010, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani – who in 2013 will become the Emir of Qatar – and others dined together at the Elysee, as guests of the French head of state.

Among other things, the purchase of the Paris Saint-Germain team by the "Qatar Sport Investment" company and the establishment of a new sports channel were discussed there. The fact is that 9 days later, Platini will vote in the executive committee of FIFA in favor of the development of the World Cup in this Emirate.

Meanwhile, in 2019, Platini was arrested and interrogated for corruption, due to some consultations paid by FIFA in his favor, worth 2 million Swiss francs. The benefits occurred between 1999-2003, but were incidentally paid in February 2011.

Seven new stadiums, an airport, roads, public transport, a hotel and even a whole new city, which will host the World Cup final. That all the work done in less than 12 years, at the cost of human lives used without being noticed, and above all under the eyes of everyone. Even if you believe (or we believe) that we are innocent in this tragedy, everyone is guilty by their silence.
