COVID variant B.1.640.2: What we know so far about the new species found in

Nobody needs a new year and a new version of COVID-19? Just as we were dealing with Omicron, who first appeared in November last year, another genre discovered in France is occupying the headlines.

News of the variant erupted on social media channels on Tuesday, but cases of what is now known as variant B.1.640.2 were first discovered nearly two months ago.

As with Omicron, evidence is still being compiled, but online misinformation about the latest variant of the coronavirus is widespread. So what is the truth about B.1.640.2?

Where was the new COVID variant discovered?

Cases of the newly identified variant were first discovered by a team of experts at the IHU Mediterranee Infection center in Marseille. In total, 12 patients from Forcalquier, in the southern French region of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, tested positive for COVID-19 but showed "an atypical combination".

B.1.640.2 was actually discovered before Omicron with the first cases found in early November, weeks before the alarm for Omicron was raised on 24 November.

The first case is believed to be of a vaccinated man who returned to the south of France from Cameroon. He then developed COVID-19 in the following days, with a test showing that he had contracted variant B.1.640.2.

How is it different from variants like Omicron?

The type, which the team has dubbed the "IHU variant," is believed to have about 46 mutations. Omicron, by comparison, is thought to have about 50 mutations; about 36 of them were mutations that changed amino acids in the virus protein, 23 of which have also been observed in other variants.

Why is this important? It is the spike protein of a variant that is of concern to epidemiologists and virologists worldwide as it plays an important role in how your body detects and reacts to the virus.

Your immune system works to produce, recognize and protect against fat proteins. If the amino acids in the protein change or are deleted, this makes it much harder for your body - and the vaccines you have introduced into your system - to defend against the virus and fight it.

Should we worry?

Experts, however, have been quick to allay anxieties about variant reports.

According to Tom Peacock, a virologist in the Infectious Diseases Department of Imperial College London, "this virus has had a good chance of causing trouble, but it never materialized (as far as we can tell at least ...)".

In a Twitter post, Peacock also points out that there were only 20 genetic sequences undertaken in B.1.640.2 for a longer period compared to more than 120,000 for Omicron.
